The Character Curriculum

You can download the pilot versions of The Character Curriculum for key stages 2 and 3 (KS2 and KS3) from this page. These materials have been created with support from the Kern Family Foundation.

The Character Curriculum for both KS2 and KS3 starts with an introductory toolkit on the philosophy of virtue ethics, designed to provide students with the vocabulary of character and virtues and an understanding of the process of virtue development. This toolkit provides a philosophical underpinning of the curriculum’s approach to character education. The Toolkits and accompanying resources can be found below.

The subsequent lesson plans are centred around topics that are both statutory and non-statutory for PSHE, Citizenship and the new Health and Relationships Education in the UK.

Each suite of resources for each key stage contains detailed lesson plans, accompanying PowerPoint slides and printable resources for each lesson.

A ‘Background to the Curriculum’ is available here and provides a context and background to this resource development project. Teacher Guides for KS2 and KS3 are also available below.

We are currently developing the key stage 1 and 4 teaching resources.  Once complete, these will form the full curriculum which will be designed and launched in 2020.

We would welcome feedback from teachers who use the resources on their content and design. There is no blue print for how educators should use the resources. We would be interested to hear about how they have been used and adapted. Please contact: Rachael Hunter (r.hunter.2@bham.ac.uk) or Ben Miller (b.j.miller.1@bham.ac.uk) for further information, or to provide feedback.
