Professor James Arthur Writes for Independence Journal: ‘To Be Of Good Character’ 29th May 2014 Academic Character Education

Professor James Arthur writes for Independence Journal, the official journal of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA). Drawing on Professor Arthur’s address to the community of St Peter’s College, Adelaide, in February 2014 (the first lecture in the College’s 2014 Rex J. Lipman Fellows Program ‘Being and Becoming’), the article titled 'To Be Of Good Character' looks at the values gap that exists within Western societies which has generated a growing interest in social morality and civic virtues in the UK. Professor Arthur goes on to define character and differentiates between moral, civic, performance and intellectual character virtues. The role of schools, teachers, parents and wider society in shaping the character of young people is also explored.
