Deputy Director Professor Andrew Peterson and Research Fellow Sarah Ritzenthaler have recently produced Service and Youth Social Action: Reflections on Jubilee Centre Studies to Date for the Centre’s Insight Series. This paper considers existing findings from Jubilee Centre studies of youth social action along with previously unpublished excerpts from interviews with young people and social action providers in order to explore the relationship between character, service and social action. Highlighting what previous Centre studies and existing literature tells us about this relationship, the paper also identifies some key tensions and remaining challenges, including the need for reflection on whether/how the virtue of service can shape young people’s character development and how the ‘double benefit’ of social action is understood and experienced by young people and social action providers.
