Jubilee Centre Launches News Literacy and Civic Engagement Research Report

The Jubilee Centre team are celebrating the release of the full and executive summary reports for the “NewsWise in Primary Education” project. The project was led by Professor Tom Harrison in collaboration with The National Literacy Trust and The Guardian Foundation and was funded by the Nuffield Foundation. This 40-school cluster randomised trial aimed to enhance news literacy and civic engagement among 9-11-year-olds in the UK. The project underscores the importance of the NewsWise programme in elevating students’ capabilities to identify fake news and its sustained impact over time. Additionally, our research establishes for the first time a clear relationship between news literacy and civic engagement among young learners. These findings are instrumental in driving forward educational strategies that prepare children to navigate the online media landscape critically and engage positively in society. The full report and executive summary, along with other project outputs, are now available here.
