Character Education for Researchers

Big Question: Can we teach character?

A major focus of the Centre’s research is on investigating the place of character education in schools, universities and other educational providers.

The Centre has surveyed pupils and teachers, designed and trialled interventions, and evaluated provision in a variety of educational establishments across the UK and internationally.  A summary of our research on character education can be found here.

The Teaching Character Inventory

The Character Teaching Inventory was designed as a practical tool to accompany The Framework for Character Education in Schools. It presents a comprehensive overview of 70 character education teaching strategies for schools to implement as part of their character education provision.

What Works Report

Teaching Character Education presents findings from research conducted with schools across England with an embedded and intentional character education provision. The findings from this research informed the development of The Character Teaching Inventory, a comprehensive overview of 70 character education teaching strategies for schools to implement as part of their character education provision

Schools or Virtue

Focussing on three schools in Birmingham, this report demonstrates neo-Aristotelian conceptions of character education in different types of schools. It aims to provide evidence for policymakers, and inspiration for educators and other interested parties, who are progressing their own approaches to developing pupils’ character in the interest of human flourishing.

Flourishing from the margins

This research report aims to give a ‘voice’ to young people on the margins of education. This report uses a combined dataset of nearly 3,250 young people from mainstream and non-mainstream, marginalised and non-marginalised, educational backgrounds, including state secondary schools, academies, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), Youth Offender Institutions, youth training organisations, and football academies.

Character Education in UK schools

This research project is one of the most extensive studies of character education ever undertaken, including over 10,000 students and 255 teachers in schools across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The research explored the formation of character in students in 68 UK schools and investigated how teachers view their role in developing good character and virtue in student

Knightly Virtues

The Knightly Virtues programme was inspired by the idea that stories of literary significance might be used in primary schools for teaching and learning about qualities of virtuous character. The programme was designed for 9 to 11 year olds and drew on selected classic stories to help teach moral character in schools.

Religious Education Teachers

This project explores Religious Education (RE) teacher’s worldviews and their approaches to promoting pupils’ character growth in RE.
