Implementing the New Ofsted Framework: Character Education Policy and Practice

The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues hosted a one-day conference on the new Ofsted Framework in the Bramall at the University of Birmingham on 10th May 2019. The new Ofsted Framework states that schools have a duty to support the character development of their pupils. This is a major turning point for character education in England; all of England’s 22,000 state schools will be asked to explicitly demonstrate how they develop the character of their pupils.
This event shedded light on the policy and practice of character education and, designed for PSHE leads and practitioners with a specific interest in character education. Speakers included Director of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues Professor James Arthur, Director of Education at the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues Dr. Tom Harrison and Ofsted’s National Lead for PSHE and for Citizenship Roary Pownall. There was also a panel discussion with Bec Tigue, Head of School with particular responsibility for Enrichment and Character Education at the University of Birmingham School, Gary Lewis, Executive Head of Kings Langley Secondary School and Chair of the Association for Character Education, Carole Jones, Headteacher of Yeading Junior School and Damien Kearns, Principal of Nishkam High School.
