Hayley Hampson-Stemp is an Assistant Professor in Secondary Teacher Education at the University of Birmingham, where she leads the Secondary Physical Education PGCE.
Prior to joining the University, Hayley spent 12 years leading Physical Education in secondary schools across Birmingham, where she developed a character-led curriculum embedding ‘taught, caught, and sought’ opportunities for personal flourishing. This now informs her work as a teacher educator, with a focus on professional character formation and virtue-informed practice. Through this lens, trainee teachers critically engage with the purpose of Physical Education and their role as educators and moral agents, supporting the development of pedagogies that are inclusive, meaningful, and responsive to contemporary educational contexts. More recently, she has contributed to the development of the Champions of Character curriculum in partnership with the Jubilee Centre and Birmingham City Football Club.
Further to this, her work includes the design and implementation of a mentor training programme to enhance the effectiveness of school-based mentoring for trainee teachers. Central to this is her advocacy for educative mentoring and professional socialisation, promoting intentional practice that enables trainee teachers to flourish through authentic collaboration with mentors to improve pupil learning.
